Symposium - Media of Connectivity and Community Formation in the Hellenistic Mediterranean

On Thursday June 15th, Sjoukje Kamphorst will publicly defend her PhD thesis Carving Communities in Stone: Inscriptions as Media of Hellenistic Cosmopolitan Connectivity at the University of Groningen, at 16:00 in the Aula of the Academy Building (Broerstraat 5).

In connection with this joyous event we are organizing a small symposium entitled Media of Connectivity and Community Formation in the Hellenistic Mediterranean.

Programme:

• Kostas Buraselis (Athens), Doctors as connections in the ancient world: from Demokedes and Ktesias in Susa to the Koans in Alexandria
• Kerstin Höghammar (Uppsala), The Koan navy and war harbour: underestimated and misinterpreted entities
• Rolf Strootman (Utrecht), The polyglot king: language and empire at the court of Mithradates of Pontus
• Sjoukje Kamphorst (Groningen), Carving Communities in Stone: inscriptions as media of Hellenistic cosmopolitan connectivity
