Spatial Heritage

The Research Group engages in the study and dissemination of knowledge about spatial heritage and its material, environmental, and societal interactions. Our work focuses on heritage in architecture and urbanism, links between heritage, landscape, and environmentalism, and the impacts of climate change on heritage and its links with ecology. The group members work on transhistorical and transnational topics; our projects explore heritage in Europe (including Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Balkans, and Eastern Europe broadly), Indonesia, China, and Egypt.

Our work is based on the collaboration between the researchers and staff at the Faculty of Arts: we aim to contribute to interdepartmental collaborations and knowledge exchanges and seek to expand our network to include colleagues from local, national, and international universities. The work of our research group is linked to the activities of the Sector Plan Social Sciences and Humanities theme ‘Cultural Heritage and Identity: Material and Intangible Heritage’ developed by the ‘Heritage Pasts and Futures’ team and, in particular, the sub-theme group on ‘Environmental Heritage.’ Our work will further be developed in regional and international collaborative projects geared towards a more comprehensive study of tangible heritage and its idiosyncrasies.
