Molecular Medicine and Innovative Treatment
If you are here on this page, that means that you are probably looking to apply for Molecular Medicine and Innovative Treatment (MMIT), or that you are at least considering it. Welcome! It's great to have you here.
MMIT is a selective master programme for which a maximum of 35 students are accepted each year. We value high-quality and small-scale education with plenty of room for personal attention and development of our students. Thus far, our student cohorts have ranged from 25-35 students.
To find out if you're admissible, please consult the entry requirements for more information.
Before we dive into the application and selection procedure, please note that:
-
As of academic year 2023-2024 all applicants with a non-Dutch bachelor qualification will have to pay an application fee.
-
Non-EU/EEA applicants are automatically considered for an ATTP scholarship.
Step 1: Enrollment
You can start the enrollment process in Studielink and/or OAS (for international students) here. Students with a Dutch bachelor degree should, after applying via Studielink, send an email to mmit umcg.nl for further instructions about the application procedure.
You’ll need to include the following documents in your application:
-
Motivation letter, please mention the following aspects:
-
Why do you want to enroll in this programme?
-
Describe your expectations and future career plans
-
What makes you the right person for this programme?
-
Indicate if you would like to apply for a scholarship (non-EU only)
-
-
Curriculum Vitae
-
Reference letter from an academic teacher/supervisor
-
Official university transcript which includes a list of all courses taken, the credit hours, the final grade received, an explanation of the grading system used, and an indication of your class rank. This information on study results must also include the grades in courses which you failed.
-
Proof of English proficiency. In most cases, a language certificate (TOEFL test or equivalence) is necessary. Please check the language requirements.
The English language requirement is not applicable to Dutch students with a “VWO” diploma and students who:
- Are a native speaker AND have completed a full secondary education in one of the following countries: USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia;
- Have already completed a fulltime bachelor programme (nominal duration of at least three years) in one of the following countries: USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia
-
Copy of passport
-
Other documents that you think will be useful in furthering your application, such as reports on former research projects.
Upon registration, a first check on completeness/educational background will be performed by the admission office after which the documentation will be send to the selection committee. Students that do not meet the Admission requirements will be directly informed and rejected by the Admissions Office.
Whether or not you will be invited to the selection interview depends on a combination of the following factors:
-
Your GPA/grades during your previous studies.
-
Your background and Curriculum Vitae.
-
Your motivation letter
The selection committee will evaluate the documents of the applicants and judges the past performance and motivation of the applicant. Applicants that are not selected for an interview will be informed by the Admissions Office with an explanation for the reason for rejection. Selected applicants will be invited for an (on-line) interview via e-mail.
During the interview, the applicant will be asked to present one of their BSc courses, the highlights of a predefined scientific manuscript and to elaborate on his/her motivation to apply for the programme. Please consult our detailed description for more information about the application and selection procedure.
We used to offer three application deadlines. Please be aware that there will be one application deadline for the academic year of 2023-2024, which is March 1st. Typically, the first step of the procedure is completed within 1 month after which the applicants will be informed.
Step 2: Interview
After the first selection of all applicants, the selection committee invites the highest ranked students for an interview. It is possible to conduct the interview online so you will not need to travel to Groningen for the interview. The interview takes no longer than 30 minutes, and will consist of the following parts:
-
A 5-10-minute general discussion on the qualifications and motivations of the candidate
-
A 5-10-minute presentation on a research project the candidate has done during their previous studies
-
A 5-10-minute presentation on a paper that will be sent to you one week before the interview
After the interview, the candidates will be judged on the following criteria:
-
The candidates' motivation: is the candidate sufficiently motivated to study MMIT specifically?
-
The quality of the research done during the candidates' previous studies.
-
Can the candidate present research done during their bachelors in a clear way?
-
The candidates' English language capabilities
Based on these criteria the selection committee will rank the students by giving grades on all criteria. The final grade will determine the ranking place of the student. The highest-ranked students will be offered a place in the MMIT programme. This will take place about two to three weeks after the interview. The admissions office will then let the candidate know if they have been admitted or not with an official letter including the feedback given by the selection committee and the ranking number of the applicant. In the situation that there are more applicants than available positions, the applicant will be added to a reserve-list and will be informed as soon as a higher-ranked applicant withdraws their application. Thusfar, all applicants who successfully enrolled for the study were able to start the programme.
