Do external MSc projects require a data archive?

Question

Do all external MSc students need to archive their data?

Answer

That depends on their registration

  • Students that are enrolled in a Master Programme at the RUG and do a project at an external institute are required to archive their data. For example, MEME students registered for a semester in Groningen but doing a project at MEME partner Harvard must archive their data, as the RUG is responsible for the quality of student reports that are produced by its registered students.
  • Students enrolled at another university that visit a Groningen research group to do a project need not archive their data, as their home university is responsible for the quality of student reports produced by its registered students. For example, Erasmus students that stay enrolled at their home university during their exchange need not archive their data.

NOTE: Quality and storage of raw data collected for an external project is generally the responsibility of the external institute. Such raw data need not be included in the data archive, but should be referred to in the corresponding metadata file, stating which data it concerns, the name of the institute + URL and the responsible PI + email. However, the project report and all secondary data (spreadsheets, databases, tables & figures) must be included in the data archive. In case of serious objections to archiving secondary data by the host institute, add a statement including the responsible institute & PI to the corresponding metadata file.
