How do I archive external data?

Question

Do I need to store externally collected data, and what if my collaborators disagree?

Answer

Yes

The data repository provides safe storage of data since access is read-only and restricted to the data owner, i.e. the PI responsible for the study. In principle, all data used for reports or publications produced by GELIFES researchers must be archived in the data repository.

The quality and storage of externally collected data is primarily the responsibility of the host institute. If stored adequately by the host institute, the primary (raw) data need not be included in the data archive, but should be referred to in the corresponding metadata file, stating which data it concerns, where it is stored (host institute + URL) and who is responsible (PI + email).

However, the final publication and all secondary data (spreadsheets, databases, tables & figures) must be included in the data archive. In case of serious objections to archiving secondary data by the host institute or collaborating researchers, add a statement including the responsible institute & PI to the corresponding metadata file.
