Christmas Lecture
The Taste of Christmas
Kira’s last year’s Smell of Christmas asked for more! So I decided to focus this year on the Taste of Christmas. Thinking of the great traditional food and drinks that are served in these joyful days. And directly related to my research on eating as the second best thing of life and the activation of the reward system in the brain. Unfortunately, there is no Christmas food tradition in the Netherlands. Unless you think that gourmetten or rollade are part of an ancient tradition. So I will take you in my lecture to two areas that do know how to celebrate Christmas: Twente and Sweden.

The people that shaped my career: Anton Steffens, Steve Woods and Epi Drost. Anton Steffens in Groningen and Steve Woods in Seattle / Cincinnati. Not only in science but also in life. From the hypothalamus controlling food intake and energy expenditure to eating as the second best thing in life. And then, stepping up from the hypothalamus to the mesolimbic dopaminergic reward system. Collaborating with Per Södersten (Karolinska Stockholm) and showing that both compulsive overeating and compulsive dieting (read: Anorexia Nervosa) might be addictive. Providing a new view on these eating disorders.
