Epigenetic patterns of ageing and disease

How much about health can we learn from a single blood test? In this presentation, I will discuss how DNA methylation patterns can improve our understanding of ageing and age-related diseases. I will focus on some recent findings from the Generation Scotland study, where we have blood-based genome-wide methylation data in ~20,000 individuals along with extensive health questionnaire data and linkage to electronic health records over 15 years of follow-up.

I am a group leader at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh and head of the Translational Epidemiology section at the Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine. My group’s primary research goal is to use computational models to understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie Alzheimer’s disease, leading to enhanced prediction, and ultimately mitigation of the disease.
