Supervisor: Prof. dr. Jos Roerdink (JBI)

Jos Roerdink studied biology and physics at the University of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, where he obtained his M.Sc. in theoretical physics in 1979. Following his Ph.D. (1983) from the University of Utrecht and a two-year position (1983-1985) as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, San Diego, both in the area of stochastic processes, he joined the Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science in Amsterdam, where he worked from 1986-1992 on image processing and tomographic reconstruction.

He was appointed associate professor (1992) and full professor (2003), respectively, at the Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Groningen, where he currently holds a chair in Scientific Visualization and Computer Graphics. He also has a joint appointment with the University Medical Center Groningen. His research interests include mathematical morphology, biomedical visualization, neuroimaging and bioinformatics. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision, was associated editor of Pattern Recognition (2003-2008), and is senior member of the IEEE. He is reviewer for a large number of international journals, and member of the program committees of numerous international conferences. In 2001 he received the Honorable Mention Winner Award of the Pattern Recognition Society. He regularly teaches bachelor and master courses in the area of computer imaging and graphics. From 2000-2009 he chaired the curriculum committee of the Computing Science program.

In this period he was leading several redesigns of the curriculum (bachelor-master, flexible bachelor, bachelor thesis). In 2010 he introduced the tutor system and the Biomedical Computing track in the bachelor program Computing Science. He is a member of the Steering Committee Learning Communities and the Expert Group Project International Classroom of the University of Groningen, and was chairman (2012-2014) of the Steering Committee International Bachelor Program of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Since January 1, 2015, he is director of the Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Groningen.
