About us Faculty of Science and Engineering Data Science & Systems Complexity (DSSC) DSSC COFUND programme Programme

Research areas

Under the guidance of leading researchers who have extensive teaching, research and supervision experience, the DSSC PhD students will specialize in one of the following three interrelated areas:

Adaptive Models & Big Data:

To explore new ways in which statistics, computational sciences, and mathematics can connect data science and complexity science in machine learning, explanatory models and complex systems modelling.

  • Data-driven adaptive models for non-stationary systems
  • Dimensionality Reduction for Huge Classification Problems
  • Low-complexity, parallel and distributed algorithms for image recognition
  • Online data collection and interpretation algorithms
  • Topological data analysis methods for Big DataVisual analytics techniques for high-dimensional data
  • Modeling of large-scale systems and its relation to data
  • Methodologies and models for complex systems prediction

Complex Systems & Engineering:

To understand, control and manage complex systems

  • Distributed methods for smart energy systems
  • Distributed control methods for sensor networks
  • Cyber-physical systems and monitoring and control systems
  • Second order oscillator networks with stochastic components
  • Rapid development techniques for robots
  • Model reduction strategies for complex, non-linear systems
  • Model reduction methods for integrated energy systems

Advanced Instrumentation & Big Data:

To develop complex instruments by designing new methods and techniques for high data volumes and high data transmission speeds.

  • Dynamical modelling and control for deformable telescope mirror
  • Scalable calibration algorithms for data from large telescopes
  • Automated and robust analysis of telescope data

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie grant agreement No. 754315.
