Xiaohua Li contributes to ADAPT-BATT project for circular battery recycling

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded €1.44 million to the ADAPT-BATT project (Adaptive Processing for LFP-mixed Battery Waste Streams), a pioneering initiative aimed at developing sustainable recycling routes for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. By integrating LFP chemistry with advanced electrochemical processing, the project seeks to enable cost-effective recovery of high-purity materials from mixed battery waste streams, aligning with EU Battery Regulations and fostering a circular battery value chain in the Netherlands.
At the Engineering and Technology institute (ENTEG) of the University of Groningen, Xiaohua Li will lead efforts focused on the separation of lithium from other multivalent metal ions using an electrodialysis process with advanced membrane design. This innovative approach aims to enhance the efficiency of ion separation, paving the way for more sustainable and energy-efficient recovery processes.
The ADAPT-BATT project is part of the national Growth Fund program “Material Independence and Circular Batteries” and unites researchers from TU Delft, TNO, Utrecht University, and the University of Groningen, in close collaboration with Back to Battery. In this recent call for proposals, nearly €14.5 million has been awarded to a total of three projects, with the University of Groningen also participating in two additional projects.
