Institute of Indian Studies

India in Groningen

The Institute of Indian Studies was founded in 1953 as part of the long tradition of Dutch Indology and it is supported by the the J. Gonda Foundation of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).

From its inception, the Institute has fostered critical discussion of ideas, texts, practices and sites of South Asia.

The Institute aims at bridging different disciplines, such as anthropology, religious studies, philology, and performative studies in the investigation of South Asian cultures.

The Institute promotes a new approach to India immaterial and material heritage that engages with its religious, linguistic and social diversity.

The Institute is a platform and network for scholars working on Indic religion, culture, politics and history at the RUG and on the international level.
