Title: Rationality questions concerning Poncelet's closure theorem
Abstract:
In 2013 Holger Waalkens completed the supervision of a bachelor's project that dealt with possible trajectories of a bouncing ball in a cookie jar (no friction, no gravity). An important ingredient in this topic was a result published in 1822 by Victor Poncelet and in 1828 proven by the famous German mathematician C.G.J. Jacobi. This first bachelor's project motivated several questions concerning thenumber theoretical relevance of Poncelet's classical theorem.
In the talk we explain Poncelet's theorem and present various new results it leads to; this will be illustrated by lots of examples.
Colloquium coordinators are Prof.dr. A.J. van der Schaft and Dr. A.V. Kiselev.
