11. BCN Speech Science
Target Group
Master’s students of the BCN Research Master, PhD candidates
Credits
3 EC.
Objectives
The course objective is to enable students to conduct acoustic speech signal analysis using appropriate theoretical motivation and analysis methods. Topics include an overview of the speech production system (respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory subsystems of the body), acoustic signal acquisition and processing, and considerations for typical vs pathological speech.
Period
In September the course will be given for master’s students, if there are places left, PhD candidates can participate. If there are sufficient participants (more than 9), the course will be given for PhD candidates only.
Form
5 lectures of 2 hours and 5 lab sessions of 2 hours.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course unit, students are able to:
-
Identify components of an acoustic speech signal and describe their relation to physiological/anatomical components of the speech system.
-
Independently design appropriate methods for speech data collection and analyses for typical and pathological speech.
-
Reflect on the validity and reliability of both data collection and analyses for speech research.
-
Evaluate a case study in speech research.
