Requesting exam facilities
General
The Faculty of Law supports students facing significant obstacles due to personal circumstances by offering tailored exam facilities. These facilities need to be approved by the Board of Examiners and are coordinated by the relevant departments or the Office for Student Affairs.
Temporary exam faciliteis
If you need short-term support - such as due to a broken wrist - follow these steps:
-
Contact a study adviser as soon as possible.
-
Submit your application using the application form.
-
Provide a recent doctor’s note or expert statement and attach it to the form.
-
You will receive a decision from the Board of Examiners a.s.a.p.
Note
Temporary facilities are granted only once and are not automatically extended. Your approval letter will outline steps to make them permanent.
Permanent exam facilities
For long-term support, complete the Information tool to determine your next steps:
-
Some facilities can be requested directly via the tool.
-
Others require an appointment with a student counsellor first.
-
After receiving an advice letter from the student counsellor, submit your application using the application form.
Important
You must share the advice letter with the Faculty yourself, by attaching it to the form. The student counsellors do not share the letter for privacy reasons.
The Board of Examiners will review your request and notify you of their decision. If approved, facilities may be granted permanently or for a set period, as specified in your approval letter.
Key deadlines
Submit your application and required documents before the following dates to ensure timely processing:
-
Block 1: 28 September 2026
-
Block 2: 7 December 2026
-
Block 3: 1 March 2027
-
Block 4: 10 May 2027
Late applications will not be processed.
Your responsibilities
-
Apply on time and submit all required documents (e.g., doctor’s note, advice letter).
-
If you cannot secure an advice letter before the deadline, apply for temporary facilities instead of permanent facilities. Include your expert’s statement in the form.
-
You will receive a confirmation email from the exam facilities coordinator at least one week before the exam period. If you did not receive this email, contact voorzieningen-rechten rug.nl as soon as possible.
Not participating in an exam?
-
If you decide not to take an exam, notify the department’s secretariat in charge of the course immediately.
-
If you are using a separate exam room, cancel your facilities with the facilities department (voorzieningen-rechten rug.nl) on the day of the exam at the latest (as stated in your approval letter).
-
Warning: unreported absences will result in the cancellation of your facilities after a second occurrence.

Requesting approval list of courses
Why request course approval?
Every pre-LLM student must request course approval at least three months before completing their programme, but at least at the moment it is requested by the Faculty to do so. For pre-LLM students this will be at the start of your pre-LLM.
Course approval serves two purposes:
-
It initiates the transition from pre-LLM to the designated LLM.
-
It ensures you haven’t missed any courses.
Without timely approval, you may face delays in completing your pre-LLM or issues when registering for your LLM.
Requirements
-
A pre-LLM is either 30 ECTS or 60 ECTS.
-
Include all courses, even those you haven’t completed yet.
Since the pre-LLM is restricted, you cannot take additional courses.
How to register your list of courses
This is taken care of in Progress. Follow these steps to register for graduation:
-
Go to Registrations and select Faculty of Law.
-
Choose Application degree certificate/approval courses and select approval pre-master programme (code PRELLM)
-
Choose the track you are completing
-
Complete the steps in the graduation process.
Ensure your list of courses is correct and complete.
Submit your list of courses when requested, even if you haven’t passed all courses yet.
Manual
Find the graduation manual in Progress:
-
Navigate to the graduation process via Enrolling.
-
The manual link is at the top of the process.
You can also access the pre-LLM completion manual here.
Making changes
To update your list of courses, email your changes to BoE-Law rug.nl. Please add the appropriate course codes in your request. This can be done at any time before your graduation date has been set.
Check programme requirements
For all programme-specific requirements, refer to the LLB Teaching and Examination Regulations (TER).

Applying for an exemption
Exemptions not very likely in a pre-LLM
Your programme depends on your previous education and is related to the LLM you wish to attend afterwards. The programme is specifically designed to:
-
Bridge the gap in level if you have completed a university of applied science (‘HBO’) Law degree previously
-
Bridge the lack of law knowledge if you have completed a non-law research university degree previously
This is also the reason why the programmes are fixed, without optional courses. As a result, it is not very likely that exemptions will be approved by the Board of Examiners. Your previous courses will either:
-
lack the research university level ( in case you have completed a university of applied science ('HBO') Law degree previously, or,
-
lack the law knowledge or legal reasoning (in case you have completed a non-law research university degree previously)
This will make it difficult to prove to the Board of Examiners that you meet the requirements for an exemption. Your previous courses would have to meet theses three conditions to be considered for exemption:
-
Similar level
-
Similar content
-
Similar size (ECTS)
Should you think that you meet all three conditions, keeping the above in mind, please contact your study advisers.
Requesting an aberrant examination
What is an aberrant examination?
An aberrant examination adjusts the standard exam setup or schedule to prevent disproportionate delays in your study programme. While often an oral exam, the examiner decides format, but also the timing.
Once approved:
-
Contact the examiner to arrange the details.
-
The exam must occur within two months of the Board of Examiners' decision.
-
You must be registered as a student at the time of the exam. Without valid registration, the examiner cannot conduct the exam, and your result will not be processed.
When can you request an aberrant examination?
Exams typically follow the schedule and format outlined in the Teaching and Examination Regulations, Ocasys, and the exam schedule. However, if your degree programme faces unacceptable delay, the Board of Examiners may approve an aberrant examination.
Conditions for approval:
-
Only granted in extraordinary and pressing cases under strict conditions.
-
Only the Board of Examiners can approve them.
For more details, refer to the Aberrant Examination Regulation.
Students with a support question
The Faculty offers tailored support for students with impairments, disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. Since every situation is unique, contact the study advisers for assistance.
How to apply
Complete the request form for the Board of Examiners.
Note: do not submit a request for an aberrant examination for your final course if you have not completed all other components. The Board of Examiners cannot process such requests.
