His Excellency Ambassador Augusto Massari presented the award, offering high praise and sincere recognition of Peters' achievements.

Dr Laura Peters, Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at our faculty, has been appointed Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia (Knight in the Order of the Star of Italy). The honour was conferred on 4 July on behalf of Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Academic contribution to Italian-Dutch comparative law

With this appointment, Laura Peters is recognized for her academic work and dedication to comparative legal research between Italy and the Netherlands. The honour acknowledges her longstanding research and deep academic engagement with the Italian legal tradition and criminal law.

Although I am not Italian, I’ve always felt an inexplicable connection to Italy from a young age, one that goes far beyond its cuisine or sunny climate. It’s a genuine fascination with the Italian culture, the language, the history, and the legal system. I fully immerse myself in it. This distinction reflects that profound bond and therefore holds very special meaning for me.

Continued commitment to international collaboration

Peters will continue to actively promote cooperation between the Netherlands and Italy, with a particular focus on criminal (procedural) law and further strengthening of academic and legal relations between the two countries.
