Work placement in Washington DC

There is the opportunity to do an internship at a number of organizations in Washington DC. This programme is intended for advanced law students who are interested in the workings of the American legal system, the American political decision-making process, or in international legal issues or current affairs. Each academic year, a maximum of ten students can take part for a period of three months.

Students can choose between two periods: from April to early July, or from early July to early October. Following a selection procedure in Groningen, potential participants will be placed with an organization in Washington DC. Further information on this, including the organizations involved, reports from previous participants, and the application/selection procedure, is available from the Department of Legal Theory Secretariat. Students will qualify for a Marco Polo grant, more information can be obtained at the International Office.

Work placement in Brussels - on hold in 2023/24!

Placement periods: From early September, or from early February.

In addition to the work placement opportunity in Washington DC, another opportunity has recently become available in Brussels. It allows students to do an internship with a number of organizations including law firms and lobbyists. The organizations represent a number of policy areas in which the European Union is active, such as human rights, trade and industry, foreign policy, social affairs and regional policy. Students will work at the organization in question for four days per week. The fifth day can be used for the student's own research, either as part of their assignment or otherwise. In each academic year, there are a maximum of ten places available; work placements vary in length from three to five months. Students may choose one of two periods: from early September, or from early February.
