Pre-LLM programmes

Introduction

Pre-LLM programmes are 1-year, 55 or 60 ECTS bridging programmes for students who want to enter one of the Faculty of Law’s LLM programmes, but have certain deficiencies in their academic background. Once candidates have successfully completed the pre-LLM programme, they can enrol in the corresponding Master's programme.

Educational Background

Students who apply for a pre-LLM must have one of the following degrees to be considered for admission:

  • A Bachelor degree of a Dutch university of Applied Science in the field of Law ('HBO-Recht'/International and European Law, accredited, 240 ECTS)
  • A Bachelor degree in the field of law from a non-Dutch higher education institution that is comparable to a Dutch university of applied science (rather than to a “research university”)
  • A Bachelor degree in a field other than law from a Dutch or non-Dutch higher education institution that is comparable to a Dutch research university

Pre-LLM programmes for International Relations and/or Political Science students

This is only applicable to the European Economic Law, International Human Rights Law and Public International Law programmes. For all other programmes, a full 55 or 60 ECTS pre-LLM is needed.

Pre-LLM programmes for Governance and Law in Digital Society
Since the programme Governance and Law in Digital Society deals with both law and social sciences, most students will need a pre-LLM before they can be admitted. The Faculty has arranged for three different types of pre-LLM programmes for this programme: one for law students (to eliminate their social science deficiencies), one for social science students and one for IRIO students (to eliminate their law deficiencies). The pre-LLM for law students is offered in the form of an online Winterschool of 15 ECTS and runs from 1 February till 1 May each year, the for pre-LLMs social science students and IRIO students are offered in the form of a Spring school of 35 ECTS (social science) and 25 ECTS (IRIO) and runs from 1 February till early July each year. These programmes have a different outlook than the standard presented on this page.
