UG Buildings: the Jantina Tammes Building
The University of Groningen as we know it now is more than the Academy Building alone. In this series, based on the podwalk and the booklet In het spoor van de Academie (in Dutch only), we are putting a spotlight on various buildings—and a work of art—of the UG and their histories. In this episode: the Jantina Tammes Building.
The Jantina Tammes House is located at Nieuwe Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat 68-70, on the corner of Grote Rozenstraat. It was named after the UG’s first female professor and the second one in the Netherlands. Tine Tammes was a botanist and became Professor of Genetics in 1919. This daughter of a chocolate manufacturer in Groningen was a botanist who primarily authored works on flax, an important agricultural crop in the province of Groningen.

The building that was named after her is the oldest building of the Faculty—and the University—and dates back to the seventeenth century. In addition to this, a chair for gender studies was also named after Tammes, as well as the UG’s interdisciplinary School of Digital Society, Technology and Artificial Intelligence.
