Refworks UMCG & UG license will end January 1, 2026

03 October 2024

Refworks will not be available anymore after January 1st 2026 for staff and students of the UMCG or University of Groningen.
The University of Groningen Library, in consultation with the Medical Library of the UMCG, decided not to extend the license for Refworks, due to growing technical network issues with the Word plugin, and the large adaptation of the Endnote application.

What to do and when?

October 2024 - April 2025:

  • Finish Word-documents with Write-N-Cite plugin citation as soon as possible, but definitly before April 2025, as the Write-N.Cite plugin will not be available anymore áfter April 2025.
  • To use Refworks after April 2025: Start using the Refworks Citation Manager, the Add-in available in the Office Store for UMCG. You cán switch right away because the new Add-in will recognize and convert citations entered with the Write-N-Cite plugin automatically!

Before end of 2025:

  • Switch to using Endnote as your reference manager. It is relatively easy to export your Refworks references. If you want to keep your Folder structure, you will have to go for the folder-by-folder export.
  • Finish your Word-documents with Refworks references as soon as possible, but definitely before you start using Endnote.
