Wiktor Szymaski participant in KWF Research and Implementation grant
A KWF grant of 700k Eur was awarded to Bart Cornelissen (UMCG, main applicant) and Wiktor Szymanski (co applicant) for developing new medicines that can be activated with X-ray irradiation. This type of irradiation is typically used in cancer radiotherapy, where it can be precisely delivered to the tumors and damage DNA in their cells, leading to a therapeutic effect. In this project, Wiktor and Bart will combine this effect with pharmacotherapy, and use the same irradiation to also locally activate a chemotherapeutic drug for a synergistic action. Wiktor will be responsible for the chemistry part, developing new, efficient ways in which molecules can be selectively activated by photons of high energy, which can also be used in other therapeutic applications.
