Loneliness and depression

16 January 2023
Blue Monday

Blue Monday is the name that was once given to the supposedly most depressing day of the year. Although this has never been scientifically proven, many people can certainly relate to it. The days are still dark, the weather is bad, the holidays are far away, and New Year's resolutions may have failed. Plenty of reasons to feel perhaps a bit low-spirited or wistful.

On this day, the UG would like to draw attention to research on depression. Hanna van Loo (assistant professor and psychiatrist) and Olivier Steen (student researcher) from the Faculty of Medical Sciences/UMCG conducted a study on the relationship between loneliness and depression. They carried out their research through Lifelines (a large-scale research programme aiming to better understand how people can age in a healthier way) during the coronavirus pandemic. Whether there is a relationship between loneliness and depression, what exactly it is, and what you can do about it are questions addressed in the video.
