Needs of students with a disability realized in Aletta Jacobs Hall

12 November 2020

The expansion of the Aletta Jacobs Hall (AJH) is finished. An examination room for students with a physical disability or other extra support needs has been added to the AJH. A large part of the room has been made suitable for autistic students and other students who are susceptible to external stimuli. The room is currently being further optimized so that even more students in the target group can use it.

Input from the students themselves

In July of this year, students in the target group visited the room in order to advise on its further furnishing. Needs hat became apparent from this visit were: more room for students who use wheelchairs, adjustable exam desks and coverings for the window panels in the doors and the windows facing outside to avoid external stimuli. Students also indicated that the ways in which students leave the room during and after an exam also needs to be given attention, as this also forms an external stimulus.

‘The new examination room is a step in the right direction to improve the University’s accessibility, but there are still many spaces that require attention, such as the UB and the Institute of Archaeology’.
Aron Grooters, a second-year Bachelor’s student of History, who has one leg.
