NWO ENW-KLEIN grant of EUR 350,000 for Dr. Guskov
Dr. Albert Guskov from the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB) has received a NWO ENW-KLEIN grant for his project ‘Time-resolved dynamics of glutamate transporters’. The grant is worth EUR 350,000. In the research project, a molecular movie about changes that take place in a protein that is essential for the normal functioning of signal transmissions in our nerves is made.
Guskov will do this by combining advanced time-resolved crystallography (which allows observations of movements of single atoms) with recent advances in photopharmacology (which produces prototypes of future medications that can be activated by light). The movie will help us to understand the fine details how such proteins work and will also contribute to the development of these light-activated drugs.
ENW-KLEIN
The ENW-KLEIN grant offers researchers the opportunity to establish scientific innovations that can form the basis for the research themes of the future. In this round, the Board of NWO Domain Science has awarded 20 applications, of which 2 at the UG.

Engineering Smart Decisions for a Dynamic World
Dynamical systems, i.e. mathematical models that describe how things evolve over time, are at the heart of much of the modern world. The real challenge, however, lies in shaping the systems’ behaviour to achieve a specific goal.
