Highest point achieved | Expansion of Aletta Jacobshal at Zernike Campus Groningen

The Aletta Jacobshal is being doubled in size , and the contractor, BAM, has reached the highest point in the construction of the new extension last week. This means that the phase of heavy construction work has been completed according to the planning. During the construction of the building structure, no hindrances arose. The steel and concrete constructions were built and the connection with the existing building was formed. The extension will be completed in mid-2020.

‘The project is advancing very quickly,’ says Bart Perton from BAM. ‘Which is a nice conclusion for a job on such a busy campus. We made a plan in advance to limit the nuisance and we set up a reporting point in the hall. This is essential in such an important educational space like this exam facility, where students and lecturers must be able to concentrate.’
Due to the connection being made, users may notice a little more of the finishing work. 'We are aware that a critical phase is now coming, but like before, we are coordinating our work as closely as possible with the users,' says Perton.
New wing and more sustainable
As well as new lecture halls and examination rooms, the new wing of the Aletta Jacobshal of the University of Groningen will include an extra foyer, study facilities and more bicycle racks. The building will be more sustainable thanks to a geothermic energy system and solar panels.
Now that the highest point has been achieved, the construction will focus on making the facade, windows and roofing windtight and watertight. The contours of the new extension can already be clearly seen.
