Marc Kramer is RUG Lecturer of the Year 2018
Marc Kramer of the Faculty of Economics and Business has been chosen as Lecturer of the Year 2018. Ten lecturers from the University of Groningen competed for the title on Wednesday, January 30, 2019. The two runners-up are Maria Ioannou (University College Groningen) and Han Thomas Adriaenssen (Faculty of Philosophy). Rector Magnificus Elmer Sterken honoured the three after a exciting afternoon in the Kapteynborg.
Dr. Julie Schell of the University of Austin started the meeting with a keynote address about Deep Learning that was well received by the teachers and students present. The teachers, who were nominated by their students, took turns giving short lectures on a subject of their expertise In a series of talks from 2.30 pm. The 10 teachers in random order:
- University College Groningen – dr. M. (Maria) Ioannou
- Medical Sciences – drs. M.A.C. (Marco) Versluis
- Economics and Business – dr. M.M. (Marc) Kramer
- Science and Engineering - prof. dr. D.J. (Dirk) Slotboom
- Theology and Religious Studies – dr. A.J.M. (Andrew) Irving
- Philosophy – dr. (H.T.) Han Thomas Adriaenssen
- Law - mr. J.H.M. (Hans) ter Haar
- Arts - prof. dr. P. (Pablo) Valdivia Martin
- Behavioural and Social Sciences - G.A. (Geke) Schuurman
- Spatial Sciences – dr. M. (Mark) van Duijn

After the exciting contest, the jury announced the UG Lecturer of the Year 2018. Marc Kramer's lecture on money, marshmallows, nudging and saving for your pension was judged the best by the jury. Kramer received an award of € 5,000 from the rector. The prize money for the Lecturer of the Year and for the two runners-up (each 2,500 euro) is made available by the COWOG fund. The prize money is to be used as an investment for their own education (further education, conference, study trips, student assistants, etc.). In addition, the winner will receive a sculpture made by Joek van Draanen, and an invitation to develop and provide an education module for the Honours College.
