DOT DOME Cinema: Live planetariumshow “Cassini: the Grand Finale” on 8 October

04 October 2017

On Sunday 8 October you may admire the star sky at DOT during the National Science Weekend. In the planetarium of DOT you will accompany the spacecraft Cassini to the planet Saturn, right up to the end of its mission in the Grand Finale. This is the first live planetarium show in a series of lectures and events organised by the University of Groningen.

DOT is the only 3D dome theater in the Netherlands, and one of only 20 of these theaters in the world. Films are projected on a 20-meter sky globe around you. This creates a unique experience as if you find yourself inside the show.

On 8 October we travel in DOT to Saturn and see the last glorious moments of Cassini. Since 2004, Cassini has orbited Saturn and made stunning pictures of the planet with his moons and magnificent rings. In addition, Cassini made many important scientific discoveries, such as ice fountains on the Saturn moon Enceladus and seas of liquid methane and ethane on Titan. On 15 September, 2017, the mission ended spectacularly. The spacecraft dived into Saturn, performed its last measurements in the atmosphere and then became one with the gas giant at 13:55.

Between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. a planetarium show starts every half hour. Tickets, available at DOT, cost € 1 per person. The shows are for young and old. The event is part of the National Science Weekend and is organized by the University of Groningen (Kapteyn Astronomical Institute and CIT) in collaboration with DOT.
