Energy Academy Europe most beautiful new building in Groningen

26 June 2017

The Energy Academy Europe building, commissioned by the University of Groningen, has been voted the most beautiful new building in Groningen. The Energy Academy was announced as the 2017 winner of the Grote Groninger Gebouwenenquete last Friday at a ceremony in the Groninger Forum. It was one of the 13 new buildings nominated for the prize. According to the jury, the energy-efficient building is not only nice to look at but also innovative. In the opinion of the jury, ‘it is a modest, almost reserved building, which makes it all the more beautiful.’

Energy Academy Europe

Energy Academy Europe is the most sustainable educational building in the Netherlands. The building is extremely energy efficient, and holds the highest possible certificate for sustainability performance – the BREEAM Outstanding class. BREEAM is a method of sustainable construction that burdens the environment as little as possible and stimulates a healthy living and working environment. At EAE, this involved keeping the demand for energy as low as possible and making maximum use of natural sources of energy such as sun, earth, air, and water.

Architecture Day

On Saturday 24 June, during the Architecture Day (DAG), visitors could could see with their own eyes how the EAE building makes use of these energy resources. Architecture Day is an annual event that puts the spotlight on iconic buildings and wants to show what architecture can do for the quality of our living environment. In Groningen, visitors could also visit the Student Hotel and the Wall House #2 as well as the EAE. DAG also organizes exhibitions and shows films about architecture.
