On Thursday May 21 the construction kickoff for the new Energy Academy Europe building took place. A large turnout could enjoy an informative afternoon.

Design presentation

The programme started with a presentation by architect Aldo Vos. In his presentation, the design process and unique characters of the new building became apparent. The new and ambitious building for Energy Academy Europe will become the most sustainable education building of the Netherlands. Optimum use is being made of the resources that are readily available: the elements earth, water, air and sunlight. A 200-metre-long air vent under the building uses the earth to cool and heat the air and water; rainwater is being used to flush the toilets; the ventilation is powered by a ‘solar chimney’; the sun’s rays are being put to optimum use for lighting and energy production.

The importance of an icon

In their speeches, the King’s Commissioner Max van den Berg, prof. dr. Sibrand Poppema (University of Groningen) and dr. Han de Ruiter (Hanze University of Applied Sciences) emphasized the essential role of the new Energy Academy Building in the collaboration needed to develop the region in its expert-role regarding energy and the energy transition. According to prof. dr. Poppema: “We need an icon”.

Energy Valley , Energy Delta Institute and Energy Academy Europe are joining forces to work together on research, education and innovation in the field of energy. In a panel discussion, André Faaij (Energy Academy Europe), Anja Hulshof (Energy Delta Institute) and Gerrit van Werven (Energy Valley) emphasized the relevance of working together in the new building.

A playful Kick Off

After the official part, all six were asked to participate in the Kick Off at the construction site; by biking, enough electricity was generated in order to load the image of the new building on a large screen.

The construction of almost 13.000 m2 with BREEAM-rating ‘Outstanding’ will be realised in 2015-2016 by the University of Groningen on the Zernike Campus Groningen. More information about the building is available on our website.
