Three thesis awards granted

Recently three thesis awards have been awarded to researchers at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (formerly known as the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences):

Marko Seslija has been awarded the DISC (Dutch Institute of Systems and Control) PhD Thesis Award 2014. The main topics of his doctoral research were concerned with the system-theoretic modeling and energy-shaping control of multi-physics systems (distributed port-Hamiltonian systems described by coupled ODEs and PDEs), and their structure-preserving discretization.

Marnix Medema has been awarded the Young Investigator Award 2014 by the Netherlands Bioinformatics Center. Medema is the third Groningen researcher in five years time to win this award. He developed a strategy to discover new secondary metabolites more efficiently.

Bram Kuijper , who obtained his doctorate in 2013, has been awarded the ESMTB Reinhart Heinrich Award for the best doctoral dissertation in the field of mathematical and theoretical biology in 2013. Kuijper’s doctoral research focuses on the correlation between sexual selection and sex allocation and its underlying mechanisms
