Jeroen ten Voorde professor by special appointment in Philosophy of Criminal Law

Mr. dr. Jeroen ten Voorde (1977) has been appointed professor by special appointment in Philosophy of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law, via the Foundation Bijzondere Leerstoel Leo Polak as of 1 February 2014. Ten Voorde will contribute to the education and research in philosophy of criminal law, based upon the intellectual inheritance of Leo Polak. Polak was a philosopher and libertine, and professor at the University of Groningen until 1941.

Ten Voorde started his scientific career in philosophy of criminal law as a PhD candidate at the Philosophy of Law Department of Erasmus University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. His research focussed on criminal law in the multi cultural society, and the issue of within which boundaries cultural differences have to be taken into account. This research resulted in his dissertation, entitled Cultuur als verweer. Een grondslagentheoretische studie naar de ruimte en grenzen van culturele diversiteit in enige leerstukken van materieel strafrecht (Culture as a Defense. A foundational-theoretical study of the space and limits of cultural diversity in some doctrines of substantive criminal law).

Since he got his doctoral degree he published several articles on the terrain of multicultural issues and criminal law. Nowadays his research focusses mainly on substantive criminal law, criminal law theory and philosophy of law. Ten Voorde is also Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the University of Leiden.
