Title: Synchronization, non-ergodicity and periodic orbits.
Abstract:
It has been observed experimentally that large systems of weakly coupled oscillators may show a collective behavior of switching to a synchronized motion, depending on parameter regimes.
A famous example for this is the synchronization of neurons in the brain.
We look at systems of infinitely many finite-state variables which are updated in continuous time via local stochastic rules (interacting particle systems).
Are there systems with a unique time-invariant measure which does not attract all starting measures (non-ergodicity)?
Can we find periodic orbits of infinite-volume measures (showing synchronized motion)?
What can we say about the domain of attraction?
We will discuss these questions and give some answers for lattice and mean-field systems.
This is joint work with Benedikt Jahnel which continues earlier research with van Enter and Opoku.
