Andrey Baryshev appointed as professor of Astronomical Instrumentation for Far Infrared Wavelengths

Andrey Baryshev, working at the Space Research Organisation of the Netherlands (SRON) has been appointed as a
professor of Astronomical Instrumentation for Far Infrared Wavelengths on July 16, 2013 at the RU Groningen. Dr. Baryshev, one of the key people at SRON, currently has a nulaanstelling as a UHD at the Kapteyn Institute/FWN. He is a leader in the field  of principles of astronomical instrumentation, especially in the far infrared and the submm. Andrey has played a crucial role in the design and implementation of the ALMA band 9 receivers, is heavily involved in the ALMA Band 5 project, and is working on the next generation of ALMA detectors. He has been actively involved in the Instrumentation and Information Master Track at the RUG.

The appointment as honorary professor has been endowed by the Stichting Leonardo da Vinci, with the aim to strengthen the existing links between SRON and the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute. Prof. Baryshev will contribute to the scientific status of the Kapteyn Institute by adding his scientific expertise in the area of instrumentation, by educating PhD students, and by developing instrumentation-related education. He will also, in collaboration with the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, explore the possibilities of novel functional materials in device concepts.
