Title: Interdisciplinary Software Engineering: Drawing
        ideas from other domains

Abstract:

The design of large scale software systems considering the need for continuous evolution and maintenance imposes significant challenges to development teams. However, problems are rarely new: experience and ideas from other disciplines can be reused to avoid reinventing the wheel. In this presentation it will be attempted to outline the research efforts that have been undertaken by our group in the area of object-oriented design evaluation and improvement. Emphasis will be placed on the inspiration from other domains ranging from growth models in social network analysis as a means of investigating software evolution through graph theoretic techniques for design pattern detection to methods borrowed from production economics for the unification of multiple
design metrics. For each approach the analogy between software engineering and the corresponding discipline will be drawn and representative empirical results will be presented along with software tools that have been developed to automate the
corresponding techniques.
