An Europeanization of the security structure. The security identities of the United Kingdom and Germany

07 October 2010

PhD ceremony: Mr. M.E. Drent, 11.00 uur, Academiegebouw, Broerstraat 5, Groningen

Thesis: An Europeanization of the security structure. The security identities of the United Kingdom and Germany

Promotor(s): prof. P.M.E. Volten

Faculty: Arts

The central question of Drent’s study is to what extent the formation and change of the security identities of the United Kingdom and Germany are influencing the European security structure in the decade between 1998 and 2008. This influence is researched in the context of the Europeanisation of security manifest in the EU’s European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP).This question is also posed the other way around: to what extent do these patterns of the European security structure - conceptualised as the security identity of the EU - influence the United Kingdom and Germany? The conclusions drawn here can be regarded as another building block in enriching understanding about the relationship between levels of analysis and processes of change, while at the same time identifying a trend of Europeanisation of security.
