Cardiovascular disease are a main cause of mortality in Western societies. Population studies revealed a negative correlation between plasma High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels and the risk for cardiovascular events. Several mechanisms have been proposed to mediate the protective effect of HDL of which the role of HDL in Reverse Cholesterol Transport, the transport route of cholesterol from peripheral tissues via the liver to the feces, is known best. In this thesis we explored different aspects of HDL metabolism and the functionality of HDL in several conditions.
