Novel polychaprolactone - tricalcium phosphate (PCL-TCP) scaffolds customized for reconstruction of dento-alveolar deformities
In this thesis, a series of in vitro and in vivo experiments were designed to evaluate the prospective use of polycaprolactone-tricalcium phosphate (PCL-TCP) scaffolds, a synthetic bone substitute material, tailored for dentoalveolar ridge augmentation. We concluded that selective modification via pretreatment using sodium hydroxide improved PCL-TCP scaffold surface characteristics and enhanced overall bone formation. In addition, favorable interconnectivity and mechanical properties of the scaffold were maintained whilst undergoing degradation. Additional studies are required to further investigate the potential of PCL-TCP scaffolds involving clinically relevant defects using large animal jaw models.
