Non-anastomotic biliary strictures after liver transplantation. Clinical and experimental studies on the pathogenesis and the role of bile salts
The aim of this thesis was to identify clinical risk factors for non-anastomotic strictures (NAS) after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT). Risk factors for NAS can be divided in three categories: ischemia-related injury, immune-mediated injury and toxic injury by bile salts. Donation after cardiac death (DCD) liver grafts, donor age, postoperative cytomegalovirus and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) were identified as independent risk factors for NAS.
