Harmonie Building has full Wi-Fi coverage

07 October 2009

Lecturers and students are increasingly using laptop computers. Up till now it was only possible to use a wireless internet connection in the larger public areas in the building. Because demand has increased so dramatically, the decision was taken to give the entire Harmonie Building complete Wi-Fi coverage. A great deal of hard work over the summer means that the Harmonie Building can now offer complete Wi-Fi coverage. It is now possible to link up to the internet with a laptop anywhere in the building. Several of the satellite buildings for Arts and Law also offer Wi-Fi facilities, but there is not yet complete coverage.

As of 1 November, the Arts Library will have 60 extra power sockets available for laptops. Before you can use the wireless network, security software needs to be installed on your laptop. This is needed so that data can be encrypted before being sent. Instructions on how to do this can be found on the website.

If you have any problems with the installation, please do not hesitate to call in at the Service Desk.

The University of Groningen is also linked to ‘Eduroam’, an international wireless network. As a result you can create a Wi-Fi connection in educational institutions within the Netherlands and in many other countries in Europe just by entering your s- or p-number in combination with the related password. For more information please go to:

We would also like to draw your attention to ‘Wireless Groningen’. The Zernike Campus and the centre of the city of Groningen will soon also be wireless – this means that with your S or P number you will be able to set up a wireless connection outside, too.
