University of Groningen climbing world ranking list for third time in a row
This year, the University of Groningen holds the 138th place on the world ranking list of top universities in the Times Higher Education – QS World University Rankings. Groningen is now 6 places higher than last year. In 2006 the University of Groningen figured at number 232, in 2007 at number 173 and last year the university ranked 144th.
‘Another step in the right direction,’ says prof. Sibrand Poppema, president of the Board of the University. ‘This rise fits into our efforts to be high in the top-100 in 2014, when we will celebrate our 400th anniversary. It is a recognition of our improving quality and international reputation, but we are not there yet.’
Quality indication
The Times Higher Education – QS World University Rankings first appeared in 2004. The top-200 is generally considered as a list of the best universities in the world. The world counts more than 15,000 universities in total, which means that the University of Groningen may consider itself as one of the world’s elite universities. For cooperation with other universities and staff and student exchange the position a university holds in these ranking lists is carefully examined. In a number of countries a high position is even a prerequisite for students who apply for a scholarship to study abroad. A good position is considered a clear indication of the respective university’s quality.
Graduates
Part of the ranking is a questionnaire among large employers. They could give their opinion about the qualities of the graduates of the different universities. The University of Groningen performs very well at this point. Sibrand Poppema: ‘Our graduates are doing fine in their jobs, their qualities are being acknowledged, and by this we are very pleased!’
