Marcel Timmer deputy professor Empirics of Growth

As of 1 February 2008, Marcel Timmer has been appointed as deputy professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business. Timmer holds the deputy chair Empirics of Growth, Trade and Productivity. He will conduct research within the research institute International Economics, Business and Management, that focuses on problems related to open economies.
Timmer’s deputy chair specializes in the development and the use of economic statistics for describing and explaining economic trends and patterns. More specifically, Timmer will deal with four applications in a number of fields that are liable to new developments: comparing growth processes between countries and sectors, the international economy, explaining the increasing income inequality between countries, and the connection between micro- and macrophenomena.
Timmer (1970) studied Econometrics and Philosophy at the University of Groningen. He was awarded his PhD in Economics at the Eindhoven University of Technology. From 1998 onwards, he has been working as a university teacher at the University of Groningen, at the Faculty of Economics and Business. The last couple of years, Timmer has been a member of the daily management team of the EU KLEMS project under the authority of the European Commission. This project aims at measuring and explaining differences in economic growth, employment rates and investments in the European Union, Japan and the USA. Currently, he is director of the Groningen Growth and Development Centre.
