Sven de Vries appointed Professor of Operations Research

Dr Sven de Vries will be appointed Professor of Operations Research at the Faculty of Economics and Business on 1 September 2007. This chair has been vacant since the departure of Prof. Wim Klein Haneveld in 2006.
De Vries is currently at the Technische Universität München where he is assistant professor of Mathematics.He is also a visiting associate professor of Economics at Yale University in the United States (November 2005- August 2007).
Operations Research deals with the design, analysis, and implementation of models to support informed decision-making. It's about seeking to understand and structure complex situations in order to predict and improve system behaviour and performance. De Vries will teach modules and supervise theses for the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in Econometrics and for the Research Master as well as teach mathematics for other Bachelor's programmes in Economics and Business at the Faculty.
Curriculum Vitae
Sven de Vries (Hamburg, 1969) studied mathematics at the University of Hamburg and at Ohio State University. In 1999 he was awarded his PhD by the TU München for a thesis entitled Discrete Tomography, Packing and Covering, and Stable Ste Problems: Polytopes and Algorithms. He became assistant professor at the same university in 2000 and then associate professor (2004-2005). De Vries has conducted several applied studies for large companies, for example on combinatorial auctions for IBM. The new professor is also associate editor of the journal Management Science and a member of the Editorial Review Board of Production and Operations Management.
