Specialization Arts, Policy and Cultural Entrepreneurship - BA ACM

The APCE specialisation in the ACM BA (and the MA of course) helps you to develop more insights in two important aspects of the arts and culture. First, it looks at how the arts and culture function in society, in other words the sociology of art and culture. Also, it introduces the research methods you need to do sociological work in arts and culture.

Secondly, the specialisation intends to prepare you for a professional career in arts and culture. Not as an artist, but as a strategic organiser and communicator, vital elements of any career in the field.

The APCE specialisation is always combined with courses in a selection of art disciplines offered at the university.

Later, in the Master APCE, you will be invited to continue this path and look among other topics at the relationship between culture and democracy, and the cultural threats of democracy. On top of that, we will do a master-wide research project on the ever complex topic of communication about the arts with genZ.

Sociology of Arts I and II (10 ECTS in year 1), Dr. Elizabeth Pinilla Duarte, Dr. Quirijn Van den Hoogen

How do sociologists study the arts? This course starts from questions about how to define arts and cultures sociologically, and of course what sociology actually is. Among the questions that will be discussed are how our everyday cultural consumption patterns are connected to social stratification, and how cultural policy studies influence cultural practices.

Empirical Methods: Arts Policy Education (10 ECTS in year 2), Dr. Beate Peter

This course continues on arts sociology and provides an introduction into empirical research methods. You will look at the study of audience participation, arts policy and arts education. You will look at case studies of the values of art experience: observation of art consumers, and learn about setting up surveys, interviewing respondents in the field, and performing a critical analysis of policy and strategic documents.

Management and Entrepreneurship in the Arts (10 ECTS in year 2), Dr. Rudi de Vries

In the course you will study how cultural organizations can increase their survival chances by thinking ahead. You will learn more about two subjects that have become vital for the arts: strategic management, with attention for marketing and finance, and international entrepreneurship, with attention for cross-cultural management, international marketing, and internationalization strategies. In seminars you will write team reports, and deliver team presentations.

Organising and Communicating in the Arts (10 ECTS in year 3), Dr. Johan Kolsteeg

In this course we introduce perspectives for understanding two fundamental aspects of any professional career in the arts and culture: organising and communicating. We contextualise these in wider societal developments and discourses: for example organising in the creative economy, the design of new types of organisations and communicating in relation to consumer culture theory, branding and GenZ.
