Language and Society
In the first semester, all students in the program take an introductory course in Language and Society, which will introduce you to the field of linguistics. We begin with a focus on societal and interactional aspects of language in society (multilingualism, dialects, and discourse analysis), but also cover language acquisition and structural and historical aspects of the study of language.
If you choose Language & Society as your profile, in the second semester you will start following a series of courses which will introduce you to general linguistics and also many sub-fields of linguistics The courses in this profile are:

Profile course 3: Language Learning
Profile course 4: Language in History
Profile course 5: Language and Power
Profile course 6: Research Methods
Profile course 7: Language in the Mind
For all profile courses, the lectures are held in English and you have a choice to attend the small seminar group in English or Dutch.
