Profile within the Bachelor’s degree programme in European Languages and Cultures

In the first semester, the module European Politics and Society will introduce you to some of the major themes that have shaped our thinking about politics and social relations. Based on authoritative scholarship, you will be immersed in key phenomena such as liberal democracy, post-communist changes, legacies of totalitarianism and the Holocaust, social value change, populism and environmental politics.

From the second semester onwards, you will take a variety of themed course units within the profile, which will broaden and deepen your understanding of political and social challenges and developments in Europe:

  • European (Dis)Intergration: a course in which you will learn about political collaboration between European countries within the EU framework and its current challenges
  • Comparative European Politics: a course in which you will compare political phenomena between different countries, such as parliamentary democracy, political ideologies, political parties and welfare states
  • Research Seminar: a course in which you study a particular state-of-the-art research topic in European politics and society depth, such as populism, nationalism, Euroscepticism or social movements
  • ... and many more!

Throughout this profile you are trained in conducting, research, developing critical questions, presenting your work and providing creative solutions for political and social challenges at local, national and transnational levels.
