About Viktoria
Hi, my name is Viktoria and I’m 23 years old. I’m currently in my second year of Communication and Information Studies at the University of Groningen. Originally I’m from a small town in Germany but I always felt the need to move to a bigger city in another country, which is why I live in Groningen now. Alongside my studies and participating in activities organized by Commotie, I enjoy experimenting with new recipes and cooking for my roommates. I also love travelling and often visit friends across Europe. One of my favorite places is Ireland, where I had the chance to live and work in 2023. I met many wonderful international people there—just like here at UG.
Why Communication and Information Studies?
While watching TV, I often wondered how commercials are produced—and even more: how the words are chosen to communicate an idea, just like politicians do. The CIS programme covers this and many other topics, showing what can be achieved through communication and how information is gathered and organized.
When I searched online for the right programme, I came across the University of Groningen. It already had a great reputation, and I also knew it through friends who studied here. I had no doubt this would be the right choice for me—and I can say with confidence that the University of Groningen truly is a great place to study.
Why Groningen?
I always dreamed of studying abroad, but like many people, I also wanted to be able to travel home quickly, rather than flying for 10 hours. Groningen is only about a two-hour drive from my hometown in Germany. This allows me to stay closely connected to my family while still studying in another country, in English, and meeting amazing international people who share similar ideas and values.
Another big reason was that some of my friends are from Groningen, and they had only positive things to say about the city and the university. And what can I say? They were absolutely right.
Future
I’m not really the type of person who makes long-term plans, so I don’t know yet where I see myself in 5 or 10 years. For now, I’m simply happy to be studying in Groningen and excited about what the future might bring.
What I do know is that my degree will open many doors and opportunities. At the moment, I’m especially interested in areas like journalism, marketing, or even film.
Tip
One thing I recommend to everyone starting their studies in Groningen is to take part in the introduction week, whether it’s KEI Week or ESN Week. You’ll meet so many great people and take part in fun activities. I was lucky enough to meet one of my closest friends during that week—end I know many others who did as well.
