About Esther
Hi! My name is Esther, I’m 19 years old and currently a second-year student of Communication and Information Studies. Besides my studies, I really enjoy working in the hospitality industry at De Postwagen in Tolbert. You’ll also often find me catching up with friends on a terrace. I like to keep myself busy and enjoy combining my studies with social activities. That balance gives me the energy to get the most out of my degree.
Why Communication and Information Studies?
During my gap year I faced a difficult choice: which study programme would truly fit me? I was interested in so many different options that I couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Eventually, I made a top three and registered for the Open Days of those programmes. CIS was the second programme I visited, and I was immediately convinced. I was so enthusiastic that I told my mother we didn’t even need to check out the third option.
What really appealed to me about CIS is its broad scope and the wide range of opportunities it offers. At the Open Day, a student ambassador told us about her internship and research at the UMCG hospital. That really surprised me: I never thought I’d be able to work in a hospital setting with my secondary school background. Because I have such broad interests and curiosity in different fields, I find it very valuable that this programme opens so many career paths.
Why Groningen?
For me, choosing Groningen was an easy decision. I grew up in the area and have always felt at home here. The idea of staying close to family and friends gave me peace of mind. On top of that, I had already heard many positive stories from my friends about studying at the University of Groningen, which made the choice even easier.
Future
For now, I’m mainly focusing on the years ahead. I’d like to dive deeper into the various Minors, and I’m considering taking one at another university in the Netherlands. That seems like a great way to gain new perspectives and experience a different environment. Since the programme is so broad, I also think it’s valuable to explore different companies during internships. This way, I hope to gradually discover which field interests me the most.
Golden Tip
My advice? Definitely attend an Open Day or sign up for the Student for a Day programme. It’s the best way to get a clear and realistic picture of the programme, the university, and the city. And don’t forget to ask questions to the students you meet there. We know better than anyone what it’s like to study at the UG, and we’re always happy to share our experiences.
