Arts at Zpannend Zernike

25 September 2025

On the weekend of 4 and 5 October, we can once again attend Groningen's premier science festival for all ages. The event is named after Professor Frits Zernike, the Groningen professor who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1953. Arts will also be present.

Household Waste and Sewage at Bommen Berend

Under Broerplein square lie cesspools (waste pits) dating back 400 to 200 years. These pits are full of traces of the past: rice, rye spines, wax seals, and much more. Armed with a microscope, tweezers, and a brush, you can explore these remarkable archaeological finds. At Zpannend Zernike, you'll join us in uncovering the secrets of Groningen's lives from hundreds of years ago.

 Become a Language Astronaut

What happens in your head when you speak? How do you learn new words? Why is language sometimes difficult? And why do some children make more language mistakes? We are language and brain astronauts! Join us on an exciting journey through your brain. Discover how linguists study language with cool tests and even a real brain scan!

Can you train your memory by learning languages?

Do you speak another language besides Dutch? English perhaps, or Arabic, or Turkish, or Groningen dialect? Or perhaps you speak more than two languages, or are you currently learning a new one? Then you're in luck! Because research shows that multilingualism can be very beneficial for your memory. People who speak more than one language throughout their lives are often less likely to experience memory problems, including dementia, as they age. Would you like to come see us for a working memory test?

Speech Lab

SPRAAKLAB is the mobile laboratory of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Groningen. Speech Lab is used for all kinds of speech research. For example, by making an ultrasound, you can see exactly how your tongue moves when you speak. Or have an app guess where you're from based on the dialect you speak.
