Groundbreaking Work Projects Zernikelaan

Roadworks and diversions at entrances to Zernike Campus as from 3 June

Allow an extra 5 minutes for your journey
23 May 2019

WarmteStad and Upgrade Zernikelaan will be carrying out essential work on Zernike Campus in the summer of 2019. Roads will be closed and diversions put in place around the main entrance and along Jaagpad (Reitdiep) between 3 June and 31 August. Visitors coming to the campus by bike should allow an extra 5 minutes for their journey.

Allow for diversions

Work will be carried out on Zernike Campus throughout the summer of 2019. Visitors to Zernike Campus should take note of the following:

  • Leave plenty of time for your commute
  • Follow the diversion signs
  • If biking, follow the smart route through Park Selwerd
  • Allow an extra 5 minutes for your journey
  • Check the latest diversions before you leave via www.rug.nl/GroundbreakingWork.

Overview of activities

  • WarmteStad: work on Jaagpad
WarmteStad will be working on Jaagpad from 3 June until 31 August. In week 23 (3 - 9 June), Enexis will make a start on re-routing the gas pipelines. Once this has been completed, WarmteStad will start constructing the heat grid between Zernike and Planetenlaan.
  • Upgrade Zernikelaan South
Throughout the summer, the roads, bike lanes and exits from the ring road near the main entrance to the campus will be renovated. Traffic lights will be erected to regulate the traffic using the exits. The bike lanes along Zernikelaan will be renewed one by one. Work will commence on the west side (around the Aletta Jacobshal pond).

Preparatory work: renovation of bike lane on the west side (past the Aletta Jacobshal)
The bike lane running past the Aletta Jacobshal will be renovated between 3 and 21 June 2019. Cables and pipelines will also be re-routed. Access to the Aletta Jacobs Hall will not be restricted.
This preparatory work is needed to ensure that the project does not overrun at the end of the summer, when the campus becomes busier.

Upgrade Zernikelaan

The Municipality of Groningen, Hanze UAS Groningen and the University of Groningen (UG) have joined forces to improve the traffic situation and overall appearance of Zernikelaan. The plan is to make it greener, safer and generally more attractive. This project is called Upgrade Zernikelaan. Work is due to be completed by late 2021. > Read more about the upgrade plans
