Start of design team for new laboratory building at Healthy Ageing Campus

01 October 2025

The University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG), in collaboration with the University of Groningen (UG), has selected architectural firm NUDUS as the design team for a new state-of-the-art laboratory building at the Healthy Ageing Campus in Groningen. With a surface area of more than 30,000 m², the building will be one of the largest laboratory facilities in the Netherlands.  The new building will combine UMCG's scattered research and diagnostic laboratories into a single central location on the Healthy Ageing Campus.

Sustainability on a human scale
The design draws on the original pavilion character of the campus, with separate, interconnected building sections and a striking height accent – the ‘boekensteun’. Wood is being used by the design team as construction material. Showing the commitment to minimizing environmental impact.

Shared service for innovation and collaboration
The new laboratory building will be designed according to the principle of shared service: shared facilities, flexible use and a clear structure make the building future-proof and inviting for collaboration. This creates a high-tech research environment where diagnostics, science, interaction and sustainability come together.

The Healthy Ageing Campus continues to develop as a breeding ground for innovation in healthcare, science and entrepreneurship. This new building will have a powerful impact on the region and beyond.
