'The end of meritocracy' (farewell lecture dr. Arie Glebbeek)

06 October 2023

The ladder of society has increasingly become a ladder of education. This puts great pressure on our education system and increasingly divides society into the higher and lower educated. This has major consequences, including in the Netherlands. Several leading social scientists now speak of a “crisis of the meritocracy". This lecture will analyze this crisis in more detail. In a powerful presentation, with a personal touch, the causes and consequences are clearly presented, and a possible solution is explored.

Dr. Arie Glebbeek was - until very recently - Associate Professor at the Sociological Institute. His narrative talent, and his teaching heart, made him a gifted and popular teacher for many generations of students. Throughout his career, he was substantively fascinated by the relationship between education and the labor market from different perspectives. This lecture brings it all together. Highly recommended for anyone with (policy, political or scientific) interest in education, labor market and social stratification.
